10 mental health tattoos

Hello guys, today we’re talking about tattoos that have a mental health meaning. Tattoos are a form of self-expression, so when some people are not able to verbally express their pain or condition they choose this way. I’m actually just gonna talk about the semicolon one and show you 10 other ideas.

Grammatically, a semicolon (point-virgule in french) is used between two related sentences, creating a pause, like a comma, without breaking them. It also means the writer chooses to continue the sentence instead of ending it. The metaphor is that the author is you, and the sentence is your life.

You got it, the semicolon is used by people with a mental illness or someone who lost a closed one to suicide. The popularity of this tattoo exploded in the last few years, maybe thanks to the Netflix drama series 13 Reasons Why, but where is it really coming from ?

The Semicolon Project

Amy Bleuel, the founder of Project Semicolon, is the one who extended the meaning of this punctuation to something more. She created this nonprofit organization in 2013 as a tribute to her father who died by suicide in 2003.

The organization is an advocate of mental health wellness. Its goal is to give « hope and love to those who are struggling with depression, suicide, addiction and self-injury ».

Blueul died on March 23, 2017 from suicide. She was 31 years old.

I personally want to do the semicolon, and maybe I’ll do another one. What about you, which one is your favorite ?
